The Department of Medical and Industrial Materials Science awarded a master’s degree to postgraduate student "Hajar Maher Abdullah" for her thesis titled:
“Developing and improving the properties of electrical insulators manufactured from local raw materials“
The defense was held in the hall named after the late Professor Dr. Abdul Muttalib Ibrahim Al-Sheikh in the department building. The examination committee consisted of

  • Professor Dr. Inas Mohi Hadi
  • Department of Applied Sciences, Medical and Industrial Materials Branch - Chair
  • Assistant Professor Dr. Ban Mazen Mazahem
  • University of Baghdad, College of Science, Department of Physics - Member
  • Assistant Professor Dr. Mufeed Abdul Latif Jaleel
  • Department of Applied Sciences, Medical and Industrial Materials Branch - Member
  • Assistant Professor Dr. Mujahed Mohammed Najm
  • Department of Applied Sciences, Medical and Industrial Materials Branch - Member and Supervisor
  • Assistant Professor Dr. Ban Ayoub Youssef
  • Department of Applied Sciences, Applied Physics Branch - Member and Co-Supervisor

  • Local raw materials were used: (Duekhla Kaolinitic claystone) urdhuma silica sand and flint clay and karst Bauxite and porcelains. Another local material were used addition (Pure Silica, Silica from rice husk ash, MgCo3, Mg (OH)2. The raw materials have been crushed and grinded to sizes smaller than 45µ except the silica sand and kaolin that have been grinded to different sizes 20 and 45 µ.  mixtures of different proportions were prepared from the above-mentioned materials. disks samples were formed by semi-dry pressing using the pressing force of 1000kg/cm2 The samples were dryers add fired in 1300,1350,1400 and 1450°C according firing program 50°C /hour in socking time 2 hours. Physical, mechanical, electrical and mineral evaluated tests were done to the samples. Samples fired at 1400°C give the best ratings. Apparent porosity and water absorption ratings were very low. Bulk density, compressive strength, breakdown strength, and dielectric constant ratings were high. The samples that were fired at a temperature of 1450°C did not have good physical, mechanical and electrical specifications because the samples containing 50%, 60% and 70% cordierite were molten, which led to their deformation.
